Van Hollen Statement on OMB’s Mid-Session Review
Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) Mid-Session Review:
“Today’s Mid-Session Review shows there is much more work to be done to bolster our recovery. First and foremost, we need to put Americans back to work – that will not only help our economy in the short term, but it is the fastest and most effective way to reduce the deficit. While the U.S. has seen 12 straight quarters of economic growth, the economy is still fragile, and it is more important than ever to pass the President’s jobs package, which has been sitting before the House of Representatives since September.
“Long-term deficit reduction is also key to our nation’s economic health. President Obama has a plan to stabilize debt while protecting Medicare and Social Security, and to replace the damaging, indiscriminate cuts from the sequester with a targeted, balanced approach to deficit reduction. The President’s plan would also extend tax relief for 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses, providing much needed certainty to working families while asking millionaires and special interests to share greater responsibility in reducing the deficit.
“There are many challenges facing our nation, and finding solutions requires compromise. It’s time to put politics aside and do what’s right for American families.”
