Van Hollen to Offer CR Alternative Today
Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, will offer the House Democratic alternative to the continuing resolution. The amendment would replace the sequester for the full fiscal year through a balanced approach of spending cuts and revenue increases. It would also fund the government through November 15, 2013 and set funding levels for FY 2014 at $1.058 trillion.
“House Republicans are demanding that we shut down the government unless we hand control of Americans’ health care back to the insurance industry and destroy the protections and benefits in the Affordable Care Act. This is what happens when Speaker Boehner turns control of the people’s House over to the extreme tea-party wing, which has consistently put rigid ideology over the best interests of our country,” said Congressman Van Hollen.
“That is why House Democrats are offering a plan that would replace the deep, immediate cuts in the sequester for the full fiscal year, preventing the loss of an estimated 1 million jobs and harmful cuts to needed services if we fail to act. It also will ensure the government doesn’t shut down,” Van Hollen added. “Our proposal would create jobs and reduce the deficit in a balanced way, and I urge my Republican colleagues to allow a vote on it. American families and small business need practical solutions, not political games.”
