Van Hollen: House Republican Tax Proposal Just More of the Same

Washington, DC – Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the House Republican tax proposal:

“The House Republicans’ proposal is just more of the same – protecting tax breaks for special interests and millionaires at the expense of everyone and everything else.  The GOP is holding hostage tax relief for 98 percent of the American people just so that the wealthiest Americans, hedge funds, and big Washington lobbying firms can keep windfall tax breaks that we simply can no longer afford.  There is no excuse for threatening the economic livelihood of the vast majority of Americans and sending the U.S. back into a recession in order to preserve tax breaks for the wealthy few.  We need a smart, balanced approach to deficit reduction and a renewed sense of common purpose in order to put our country on a fiscally sustainable path.”
