Van Hollen Applauds Passage of the Expedited Rescissions/Legislative Line-Item Veto (HR 3521)

Feb 8, 2012

Washington, DC – Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, today released the following statement after House passage of the Expedited Rescissions/Legislative Line-Item Veto (HR 3521):

“Today the House passed legislation that will help ensure we are good stewards of taxpayer dollars.  This bipartisan bill, which I introduced with Congressman Paul Ryan, creates a Constitutional process that enables the President to propose the elimination of unnecessary spending items and gives Congress a chance to vote on those items.

“Budget process reform alone cannot be a substitute for judgment.  Nor does it replace the urgent need to put Americans back to work and to put our nation on a path toward long-term fiscal sustainability.  But this bill provides for great accountability and can help ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.  I urge my colleagues in the Senate to quickly bring it up for consideration.”
